On Thursday, 16th January 2025, True Ambassadors attended an important event organised by the Newham Council. It was held at Plaistow Library and brought together local organisations, council members, and residents. Together we marked the end of the People Powered Places project and looked at its impact. Attendees found out how £200,000 had been spent in their area and the positive changes it had made to the community.
People Powered Places was an initiative that allowed Newham residents to make improvements in their local areas. A total of £1.6 million was allocated to community-led projects across the borough. Newham was divided into eight Community Neighbourhoods, each with £200,000 to spend on local improvements.
The project followed a simple process. First, residents decided on their local priorities. They then discussed solutions for local issues and submitted project proposals. Residents could apply for up to £5,000, while local organisations (VCFS) could apply for up to £20,000. After that, residents voted for their favourite projects. Residents and local organisations carried out the successful projects, with support from Newham Council. Finally, the community gathered to celebrate the success of the funded projects.
At the event, attendees highlighted the role of the working group as a key factor in the success of People Powered Places in Newham. The working groups are made up of residents, council officers, and local councillors. Each of Newham’s eight Community Neighbourhoods has its own group. These groups play a major role in shortlisting project proposals, monitoring their impact, promoting the initiative, and providing feedback to improve both local services and the project itself.
The event was filled with representatives from different organisations. All were eager to share their successes and how the funding had made a difference in their local communities. The atmosphere was one of celebration, as attendees reflected on the journey and achievements of the project.
Each organisation had the chance to present its work, explaining how they used the funds and the impact their projects had. This openness allowed everyone to understand how the initiative had helped different parts of the community.
The event also provided an opportunity for feedback. Both organisations and residents shared their thoughts on the People Powered Places project. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunities the project provided, sharing how it positively impacted their lives and the community.
As part of the event, True Ambassadors shared the impact of our Health and Well-being for All project. Funded by a £20,000 grant, the project brought the Plaistow community together to promote a healthier lifestyle. Over the past year, we have organised a range of activities aimed at improving physical health, mental well-being, and social connections.
These activities included fitness sessions, massage treatments, and art workshops, which helped participants relax and express themselves. We also held health talks and educational sessions on topics like nutrition, mental health, and community building. The project was for residents, workers, and students in the Plaistow area. By collaborating with local venues such as Plaistow Library and Newham Leisure Centre, we created lasting positive changes in the community and fostered a stronger sense of well-being and support among residents.
While the event marked the conclusion of the People Powered Places project, it also laid the foundation for future work. True Ambassadors, along with other organisations, expressed a commitment to continuing the work started by the project. There were discussions about future partnerships and funding to ensure the momentum created would continue.
We would like to thank all the councillors for their support. Their help was crucial in making the People Powered Places initiative a success. A special thank you to Councillor Charlene McLean and Councillor Sophia Naqvi for their dedication and advocacy throughout the project.
We are also grateful to Natasha Abankwah, Senior Community Neighbourhood Officer at the London Borough of Newham. Her support was invaluable. Natasha helped us connect with the right people and resources, ensuring the project’s success.
With their help, we have made a positive impact in Plaistow. We truly appreciate their commitment to improving the lives of local residents.
