As part of the “Health and Wellbeing for All” Project, supported by Newham Council, our independent charity, True Ambassadors, holds sessions every Tuesday. On 15/10/2024, Peter from Community Heartbeat joined us to teach residents about the importance of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) during cardiac arrest. He also demonstrated how to use a defibrillator correctly.
Peter explained the key steps to take during a cardiac arrest emergency. He highlighted how recognising the signs and acting quickly can save lives. Peter showed how chest compressions, a crucial part of CPR, help maintain blood flow until emergency services arrive. These compressions should be delivered at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute and at a depth of 5 to 6 centimetres for adults. They mimic the heart’s natural pumping action, helping keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs. This greatly increases the chances of survival.
According to the British Heart Foundation, over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the UK, but sadly, fewer than one in ten people survive. Immediate CPR can double or even triple the chance of survival. Knowing how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator is a crucial skill for everyone in the community. When CPR and defibrillation are applied early, survival rates can rise to as high as 74%.
The session was highly informative, with residents asking questions and participating in a hands-on demonstration using electrode pads. By engaging the community in learning these life-saving skills, we are working towards creating a safer and healthier environment for all.
The day also brought some unexpected joys. These included a delicious noodle and vegetable meal prepared by Nora’s niece, one of the residents. The event wrapped up with a fun bingo game, which brought energy and excitement to the room.
At True Ambassadors, our UK independent charitable organisation, we take pride in organising activities that bring the community together. This session was a perfect example of how we can share knowledge, skills, and good food as a group. Each meeting strengthens the bonds between participants. We notice how they eagerly anticipate the next session and the chance to reconnect with each other and our volunteers.
