On 5th November 2024, True Ambassadors hosted another session as part of the “Health and Wellbeing for All” Project, welcoming Newham residents to learn about gut health and the importance of cancer screening in a supportive setting.
The session, led by Leena Khagram-Dhar from the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, began with an interactive quiz that encouraged participants to test their knowledge of gut health and bowel cancer. Leena’s approachable style fostered open sharing, with participants discussing personal experiences and health concerns freely.
Leena emphasised the link between emotional health, diet, and gut wellness, stressing the importance of breaking the stigma around cancer discussions. She shared key information on bowel cancer’s causes and symptoms, offering practical advice on prevention and underscoring the importance of regular screenings as a proactive health measure. For more information on bowel cancer, attendees were encouraged to visit the NHS website for trusted guidance and resources.
Turning to stress management, Leena invited participants to share personal stress triggers and discussed effective coping strategies, including volunteering as a way to manage stress.
During a Q&A session, participants asked health-related questions, and Leena demonstrated the safe use of the bowel cancer screening test kit. She encouraged everyone to order the kit and consider early testing as a crucial step for effective treatment.
Doris Okundaye, CEO of True Ambassadors, expressed gratitude to Leena and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to making health information accessible. She encouraged attendees to share their health concerns, assuring them of ongoing support from both True Ambassadors and the NHS team.
The event also honoured Vangie, a cherished member and long-time supporter of True Ambassadors, known for her warmth and commitment to the community.
These sessions highlight True Ambassadors’ dedication to community wellbeing. Beyond sharing health information, they create a space for open dialogue and support, where Newham residents build both knowledge and trust. Together, the community is making meaningful strides toward healthier lives, helping one another along the way.
